American Red Cross Courses 2018
American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course - Online + Classroom
Instructor: Kelly Wencl

This course will provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. The blended learning format allows the student to work independently on theory utilizing a series of informational videos and tutorials, and then combines that online knowledge acquisition with in-person water, First Aid and CPR/AED hands-on skills training. Participants must be 15 years old on or before the last day of class. Cost includes participant materials and supplies. Participants must attend ALL classes in the session for which they register. There must be a minimum of 5 people registered in order to hold class.

*(This course requires participants to complete online learning prior to the in-class skills sessions. Please make sure to provide a valid email address for the course participant when completing registration, as this is how the web-based learning segment will be assigned and how the instructor will communicate important information regarding the course.)

Participants will also be required to pass a prerequisite swimming skills test before being allowed to progress through the course. 
Prerequisite skills include:
· Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing
· Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs
· Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds

Please note: Participants MUST pass the prerequisite swimming skills test in order to progress through the classroom portion of the course - participants will NOT be allowed to continue or be certified even if they have completed the online portion, and NO refund will be issued if unable to pass the prerequisite skills on the first day of class!

Location:  Discovery Middle School 

Upon successful completion of this course participants will receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED valid for 2 years.

​Lakes Area Recreation Water Safety Aide Course
Instructor: Kelly Wencl
The Lakes Area Recreation Water Safety Aide Course teaches participants how to assist Water Safety Instructors in conducting swim lesson classes. Participants must also exhibit a strong sense of maturity and responsibility and be at least 14 years of age on or before the last day of the course. Course will consist of classroom and pool time. Cost includes participant materials and supplies. This course is facility specific to Lakes Area Recreation. 

LocationDiscovery Middle School pool and classroom (an informational letter will be sent out prior to the first day of class)

Note: Participants must attend ALL classes. There must be a minimum of 5 people registered in order to hold class.

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course (WSI) - Online + Classroom

The purpose of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants' progress. Swimming experience is a MUST. Participants must be 16 years of age on or before the last date of the course - proof of age will be required at the start of class. Cost includes participant materials and supplies. Participants must attend ALL classes in the session. There must be a minimum of 3 people registered to hold class.

Participants will also be required to pass a prerequisite swimming skills test a Level 4/Intermediate 4 ability or higher before being allowed to progress through the course. Prerequisite skills include:
- 25 yards of front crawl
- 25 yards of back crawl
- 25 yards of breaststroke
- 25 yards of elementary backstroke
- 25 yards of sidestroke
- 15 yards of butterfly
- Maintain position on back for 1 minute
- Tread water for 1 minute

Please note: Participants MUST pass the prerequisite swimming skills test in order to progress through the classroom portion of the course - participants will NOT be allowed to continue or be certified even if they have completed the online portion, and NO refund will be issued if unable to pass the prerequisite skills on the first day of class!
